Bakhmut, which has sustained severe damage, has been a major target for Russian forces in the Donetsk area for months.
The offensive has been halted by Ukrainian forces, though.
Mr. Zelensky wished his troops luck in a video that was broadcast on the Freedom TV channel on Telegram.
"I believe that the heroes of Bakhmut should have what everyone has, that everything should be OK for their families, children, and themselves," he stated. "I believe that they should be warm and healthy.""The fact that there is light and then there isn't makes it difficult for me to wish them light. The most important thing is that there is inner light."
Serhiy Nikiforov, the president's spokesperson, said that Mr. Zelensky had already departed the city before his visit was made public.
Previously, Mr. Zelensky traveled to other freshly freed cities including Kherson and Izyum. For months, Bakhmut has been the center of the Russian operation, and Moscow has devoted significant resources to its conquest.
Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, the two significant cities in the Donbas area currently under Ukrainian administration, may be accessible.
However, it is believed that any Russian victory at this time would be just symbolic because Ukraine has bolstered its defenses in the neighborhood.
Both Russian and Ukrainian commanders have referred to it as a "meat grinder" since both sides have suffered significant losses.
There are presently very few inhabitants living in the city, which had 70,000 residents before to the conflict. The 300th day since Russia invaded Ukraine is today.
Additionally visiting Bakhmut, Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Malyar said on Facebook: "What are 300 days in our more than 300-year battle for freedom from Russia!
"We're on our feet. We're at odds. We are going to triumph!
