In what authorities characterized as "a horrific catastrophe," a train derailed in Tennessee on Tuesday after crashing with a semi-truck carrying a large concrete beam. Two railroad personnel were hurt.
The Norfolk Southern freight train was traveling through Collegedale when the truck carrying a 134-foot concrete truss bridge beam was parked on the rails, according to a statement from the Hamilton County Office of Emergency Management.
According to the Tri-Community Volunteer Fire Department, the vehicle had been waiting for the light to turn green and was attempting to clear the tracks when the crossing arms were raised.
According to Hamilton County officials, three locomotives and ten train carriages derailed. Two Norfolk Southern Train personnel were hospitalized with minor injuries. According to news sources, the truck driver was unharmed.
